8 Steps of Brewing a Healthy and Flavourful Tea

Brewing Tea

The correct and healthy method of brewing tea can vary depending on the type of tea you are preparing. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you brew a delicious and healthful cup of tea:

1. Choose High Quality Tea:

Start with fresh, high-quality tea leaves or tea bags to ensure the best flavour and health benefits.

2. Use fresh, filtered water:

The quality of water and dissolved substances can significantly impact the taste of your tea. Use fresh, filtered water for the best results.

3. Heat the water to appropriate temperature:

Different types of tea require different water temperatures for optimal brewing. Higher temperatures may cause the tea to lose its benefits. Here are some general guidelines for water temperature:

  • Green tea: 160-180°F (70-82°C)
  • White tea: 170-185°F (77-85°C)
  • Oolong tea: 180-200°F (82-93°C)
  • Black tea: 200-212°F (93-100°C)
  • Herbal tea: 212°F (100°C)

4. Preheat your teapot or cup:

Pour a small amount of hot water into your teapot or cup, swirl it around, and then discard the water. This step helps maintain the water temperature during the brewing process.

5. Measure the tea:

Use about one teaspoon of loose-leaf tea or one tea bag per 8 ounces (240 ml) of water. Adjust the amount of tea to your personal taste preference. You can use a teapot or an infuser1 for brewing loose-leaves for multiple cups. You can add the tea bags even directly to tea cup(s), specially if you are brewing a single cup for yourself.

6. Steep the tea

Pour the hot water over the tea leaves or tea bag and let it steep for the recommended time. Steeping times can vary depending on the type of tea:

  • Green tea: 2-3 minutes
  • White tea: 2-5 minutes
  • Oolong tea: 3-5 minutes
  • Black tea: 3-5 minutes
  • Herbal tea: 5-7 minutes

7. Pour the tea:

After the recommended steeping time, pour the tea from teapot, using a strainer, or infuser into the cups or simply take out the tea bags. Over steeping can result in bitter taste.

8. Enjoy your tea:

Savour your freshly brewed tea plain or with your preferred additions of honey, lemon or milk, in the company of your loved ones or your favourite book.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a delicious and healthy cup of tea that maximises the flavour and potential health benefits.
